Aesthetics versus Authenticity?

Reflections on the presentation of and with disability
24 and 25 May 2011, Lecture hall of the Zurich Academy of Arts
Ausstellungsstrasse 60, 8005 Zurich

A symposium of Migros Cultural Percentage as part of IntegrART and in collaboration with the Institute of Art Education of the Zurich Academy of Arts (ZHdK). Supported by Pro Helvetia, Federal bureau for equality of people with disabilities and the Corymbo Foundation. Conception and Supervision: Imanuel Schipper, trans4mator

What does aesthetics mean in the case of a body presenting itself beyond «beautiful», «ideal» or «normal»? In the case of performing arts, what is meant by authentic? Are the movements of a body with a disability authentic? Can they be unauthentic?

The longing for authentic experiences is omnipresent. Real life storms the stage, biographies are staged, authentic feelings are produced. Is authenticity only possible if certain aesthetic standards are observed and what is the situation if performers with disabilities appear on stage?

The third IntegrART symposium takes a critical and scientific look at the controversy between aesthetics and authenticity in performing arts. Invited are performance scientists, theatrical directors, performers and educationalists from the US, Europe and Australia. In lectures, lecture demonstrations, discussions and workshops the speakers and the participants will reflect on the following key questions:

_What do aesthetics and authenticity mean beyond the norm?

_Can performers with disabilities be professional? Why is this question asked and who is it asked by?

_What function does the spectator adopt on viewing the performance? To what extent is the spectator emancipated, does he just feel pity and appreciative admiration? What can spectators learn from performers with disabilities?
